“Ye knae, it would nae kill ye tae embrace optimism for once,” Doyle grumbled.

Angel stopped walking. He turned to face him, and as the moon slid out from behind dark clouds, it cast an eerie glow on the fangs he let the Demon see. “No,” he told him. “It just might very well kill everybody else instead. That’s what happened the last time I was happy.”

“But that was wholly happy, right? One moment o’ perfect bliss? Ye just have tae make sure it’s not complete an’ utter bliss. Ye can be happy wit’out bein’ tha’ happy, can’t ye?”

Angel sighed. He glanced toward the mouth of the alley where his car was waiting with the most beautiful woman he had ever known behind his wheel. Buffy had been beautiful, but part of what had added to her glow was the beauty of her pure soul. Cordelia’s beauty would have already eclipsed Buffy’s back in Sunnydale if her soul had not been tainted. But every day now, he was seeing more and more of that old “Queen C” persona slip away. Every night, she looked more beautiful each time he saw her.

“I’m afraid that can’t happen with her,” he whispered audibly.

Doyle sighed, his own gaze trailing to the same area. The street lights lit up the end of the alley, making it really look like they were both walking up out of a dark, dark tunnel toward the light -- and what a beautiful light it was! “I’m afraid ye’ve got me there,” he agreed. “Besides, who says Cordy’s gonna fall fer th’ hero? She might jest be th’ one tae look at th’ wee guy an’ see what all I’m -- he can offer!”

“Sure.” Angel chuckled.

Doyle grinned as he saw a smile flash across the Vampire’s face. He had won this one, even if he wouldn’t win the final battle. He’d brought Angel a tiny bit of happiness this night. He’d made his friend smile, and that felt better than beating all the bad guys in the world. “A wee bit o’ happiness,” he whispered, “ne’er killed anyone.”
