What's Making Me Happy Today: Flight of the Icaron
Jan. 6th, 2026 10:17 pmThe actual-play audio drama podcast
worldsbeyondnumber just started a short science fiction campaign, Flight of the Icaron, and the first episode knocked it out of the park.
Official Summary:
We have Aabria Iyengar as space mining mogul Kiki Davis, Brennan Lee Mulligan as engineer and father Andrei Dalca, and Erika Ishii as troubled young tragedy survivor Vera "Fishcakes" Lam—with Lou Wilson as GM, bringing some top-notch narration and NPC work that immediately has this feeling like a fully fledged universe full of characters with long histories and established relationships. There's a weight and rootedness to the worldbuilding and plot, but there's also still plenty of humour, especially in a recurring bit about trying to heist the good herbed Cheddar from a boring government party. I'm hooked, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
Official Summary:
This is the maiden voyage of the Icaron - Earth’s first S-Class Battle Station. This demonstration flight has been certified as routine by all relevant oversight bodies. Systems have been tested, personnel vetted, and contingencies reviewed. Passengers are reminded that the Icaron represents the highest standard of planetary defense engineering.
Please remain seated.

First 2026 (not Sunday) Check In - Miami Vice edition
Jan. 6th, 2026 11:25 pm No, it's not Sunday, but I haven't done any of these in a while, and that's the title of my post series, so.
I've written two stories this year so far, which is a good start even though they're both short. I've got to get cracking on my prompt fill for
Small Fandom Fest, too. Yikes! And I've got my main series to work on, and a continuation of a fic that was originally only going to be a short one-shot, but popular demand inspired me to expand it...
This show, this show. I can't believe the stuff it has me doing! I'm almost ashamed to admit. Stuff I swore I would never do. Like sign up with TikTok. Forgive me. I still hate it. I only want to see Miami Vice related vids, and the short length of a lot of them is ridiculous. I found a new-to-me artist though, who posted one of his songs to an MV video. But serious, I really hate it. Very annoying site.
I post a lot of episode reactions on Tumblr now, instead of just lurking like I used to do. I've been taking notes and making screencaps as I watch the episodes. I'm considering making some gifs, now that I have the means to do it... Heck, if I had the patience I could make music videos. I made a Sonny/Rico playlist (well, several of them on my classic Media Player, but one online for sharing). I've started making memes, and oh yeah, I've also started using screenshots/photos to make Titles for my fanfic. Sheesh!
I was just lurking on r/Miami Vice on Reddit and thinking about how this show truly had something for everyone. Men, women, people of all genders and sexual orientations, slash fans, action fans, cishet men who loved the cars/boats/guns/bikini-clad women, there was POC diversity, social commentary that's still relevant today, gorgeous men... And we're all still here thirty years later, happy as pigs in shit. 😀😁🤣

Challenge #1:
The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.
I'm svgurl. I'm in my 30s, and have been actively part of fandom on and off since 2007, when I created my LJ. The SV part of my username stands for Smallville, which was my original fandom and I was very mono fandom for years.
My profile is up to date and gives a little background history and the fandoms/ships I'm interested in. I'm focused on 9-1-1/Buddie these days, but I still love MCU, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, and past favorites do come up from time to time.
I can be found on various places:
AO3:
Tumblr:
Discord: svgurl

This is my 5th year participating in the Snowflake Challenge and I really love the way it gives everyone a chance to interact with people that you normally wouldn't. I am not comfortable with just going to someone's journal and talk to them out of the blue, so it's nice that this gives you a chance to do just that. I am looking forward to doing more of that and meet more people on here as well! :)
Miami Vice ficlet - Reminders of Miami

Title: Reminders of Miami
Fandom: Miami Vice (TV)
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG
Words: 668
Characters: Sonny/Rico
Summary: Sonny, Rico, and a cat. A study in Cute.
Notes: This fic in in the same ‘universe’ as my story, “Baby Ducks,” but works fine as a standalone, too.
Inspired by the scene in “Death and the Lady,” where the boys got a kitten for Gina, because I died of cute. Also, I have a special interest. I lost my own orange baby last year, after 14 years of companionship. When I got him, he’d been named Sonny. Yes, I had an orange cat named Sonny. Of course I didn’t change his name, but I did mostly call him Chewy since he was always chewing on things he shouldn’t (especially plastic bags).

"Maybe, in that last fleeting moment, you might just realize you treasure your individuality."I used the tag 'ambiguous ending' because I don't know where canon will take us from here, but oh man, does this video (rightfully) feel like resisting and continuing to exist as yourself against overwhelming odds and pressure is its own triumph. My heart ached, my heart soared.

2026 Prediction Meme
Jan. 6th, 2026 12:03 pmThis little book meme is shamelessly lifted from
calliopes_pen.
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Turn to page 126
3. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.
My nearest book is The Shining by Stephen King, so we're off to a great start before I've even opened it.
I'm going to include the following lines since this is actually a bit of dialogue followed by a lovely little sinister premonition.
"I doubt it," Ullman repeated, and he sounded sad. "The place in Florida is a dump, if the out-and-out truth is to be spoken. The Overlook is my real job. Take good care of it for me, Mr Torrance."
"I think it will be here when you get back next spring," Jack said and a thought flashed through Danny's mind.
(but will we?)
So, what this reads as to me is reluctantly turning over responsibility of something to someone else and it all going to hell in a handbasket.

Things I've Been Reading and Watching
Jan. 5th, 2026 07:43 pm1) "Bloomberg found that in areas near significant data center activity, wholesale electricity prices rose as much as 267% in a single month. After analyzing 25,000 “grid nodes” they found that more than 70% of those showing price increases were located within 50 miles of data center activity. With data centers forecast to account for 9% of all US power demand by 2035, the reporters said the “unprecedented granularity” of their data showed what is at stake for those living nearby this AI infrastructure."
Another data research story looked into climate change conspiracies, revealing "that hashtags were predominantly pushed by accounts with ties to oil interests in Gulf states and uncovered a coordinated effort to amplify climate conspiracy narratives through networks of automated and semi-automated accounts."
2) Been watching Celebrity Name That Tune and recently Christian Siriano was on it. In some ways this was the funniest one because neither he nor the other person were any good at identifying songs. By the second round they were tied and they ended up going through 4 tie breakers before he finally got one so that he could go on to the third round. Jane Krakowski ended up sitting down on stage while they went through song after song.
3) It's always great to celebrate new content in the public domain. It's still too little but major characters and works are now there, including Poirot and Miss Marple, Nancy Drew, Lord Peter Wimsey, various cartoons, art and music.
4) Cementing its reputation as worst company ever, Meta created ‘playbook’ to fend off government pressure to crack down on scammers. This includes making "scam ads “not findable” when authorities search for them."
5) Amid so many retail closures and the growth of audiobook sales, bookstores were growing in 2025. "This year, 422 newly opened stores joined the American Booksellers Association — nearly a hundred more than joined last year. Barnes & Noble added 55 stores around the country and Books-A-Million added 18. By comparison, Books-A-Million opened seven new stores in 2024.Genre-specific bookshops are also thriving." This even though 40% of Americans read no books at all. However "Only 14% of Americans say they prefer to read digital books, but these are some of the country’s heaviest readers. 13% of them say they read 50 or more books in 2025, compared to 4% of those who prefer physical books and 5% of those who prefer audiobooks."

Pets! We know them, we probably have positive associations with at least one type of pet, and they've appeared in our creative endeavors since time immemorial. Considering that, we felt that a challenge revolving around them would be appropriate.
Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!
Okay, so I'm going about this one in two parts.
First, some sharing of historic Real Cat Fiction. This was my way of cheering myself up back in 2020-21 - I basically hated lockdown (for context to anyone who doesn't know me that well or at all, my family is pretty much scattered across the UK and I didn't end up seeing them for over a year even in the times when there was some loosening of restrictions). If you're in the UK you will be well aware of the various political scandals at the time (and even if you're not in the UK you probably picked up some of it). So this is basically Larry the Cat (and the other Whitehall felines Gladstone and Palmerston) getting the better of the government.
https://archiveofourown.org/users/creatureofhobbit/works?fandom_id=295954
(I've only linked to my own fics here, although more Larry the Cat does exist - I'll spare you the horror that is Boris Johnson getting pegged by Liz Truss.)
And for something new create for the challenge, here's a fic about Gretchen from Dark (a poodle who is sent through time from 1953 to 1986 and reunited with her original owners in the future):
Nothing here made any sense to Gretchen.
When Helge had thrown the stick into the caves for her, it had seemed just like any other time when he, or Claudia, or Egon or Doris, would have done so; Gretchen would find it, bring it back to whoever had thrown it, and that was what she thought would happen this time. But now she doesn’t recognise the house she’s been brought back to, and she’s confused by the people she’s with – the middle aged woman and the older man smell like Claudia and Egon, they sound like them, and Gretchen even thinks she can see the people she knew in their older faces now. But she still finds herself looking for the eleven year old Claudia, cannot understand why Doris Tiedemann no longer seems to be living in the family home, and is still getting used to this other person, the one called Regina (and her friend Aleksander who is often around), who seems to live here now but isn’t someone Gretchen remembers from before.
She’s seen Helge Doppler, too, (although is relieved not to have encountered his scary mother, Greta, so far; Greta always scowled if she ever caught sight of Gretchen) and wondered if he remembers her, if he can still remember throwing that stick that had led to Gretchen travelling forward in time. He still smells the same, too, although he too has changed physically; he has injuries to his face which Gretchen doesn’t remember him ever having had before. If she could speak the same language as him, Gretchen would be asking him right now whether he had known when he threw that stick that it would lead to her ending up in 1986; he probably didn’t, since it was the scent of her owner, Claudia, that Gretchen had followed, rather than Helge himself (but again, the woman who had opened that door for Gretchen looked different, older still even than the Claudia who is living here now and who seems to have no idea what had happened.) She’s seen that other friend of Claudia’s, Tronte, too; since he had only just arrived in Winden in 1953 she hadn’t spent that much time with him, but enough to be able to tell that this older man is the same boy who had just moved in with them.
Sometimes Gretchen wishes she had just turned around and gone back the way she had come, just dropped the stick at Helge’s feet and then waited for Claudia and Tronte to come back; at least that way she would be living the life she knew. And people would know her, too; since she isn’t able to communicate to the Tiedemanns that she’s still the same Gretchen who belonged to the family in 1953, they’re talking as though she’s a different dog altogether, calling her Gretchen because she looks just like the dog they used to know. If she could at least explain, maybe someone could help her get back to the Tiedemann family and home that she was familiar with; instead she’s left trying to navigate this new time, this family that are her own and yet not the family she knew.
12/28/25 - 1/3/2026
Jan. 4th, 2026 12:40 pmI've been playing only Duel Links. I started reading The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle for a challenge over on LibraryThing, but I DNF'd when
I have plenty more things to read this month though for other challenges on LibraryThing and The Spellshop for
bookclub_dw.
I've been trying to recolor the Windows Calculator and I finally figured out how to run the repository, but Visual Studio says it can't read a few files. I'm thinking I might have to download and use the 2022 version of Visual Studio instead. (The last time the read-me on GitHub was updated was 2 years ago and that was just for higher quality screenshots so it says the latest version is fine, but that might not be true.)
I'm trying to figure out my general goals for the year ahead. I have some craft stuff planned and I set a goal of 6,000 words in TrackBear. I'm hoping to write more than that, but at least with a small goal, it's really easy to get ahead so if I have to take a break from writing for some reason it'll be fine. I also want to get back into photography this year.

Happy New Year!
Jan. 4th, 2026 11:44 amHope everyone has been alright so far. My year has been alright so far. Used a Barnes and Noble gift card on some books. Picked up The Princess Knight by Cait Jacobs, Gate to Kagoshima by Poppy Kuroki, the hardcover of Assistant to the Villain By Hannah Nicole Maehrer and the BL manga Dear Door. All I'm excited to read, especially Assistant to the Villain and Dear Door.
Speaking of reading, did you know there's a
bookclub_dw?! I'm excited about it, hehe. The book for January is The Spellshop, which has been on my tbr since last year. So hopefully this will help me actually read it. I want to read more and stop letting myself get distracted and push things off.
Same for writing. There's so many prompts, tables and plot bunnies I've wanted to work on. So many WIPs. I really just need to sit down and get them done. Maybe pick up characters again fro
1character and not forget about them T^T.
Some thing else to be excited for as I do want to sign up for it this season.
seasonsofdrabbles is hosting their Winter Season round and the Nominations have started!
Finally so shameless promotion on my part aka things I've posted since the last time I mentioned anything.
